Selective Mutism – Evidence-Based Practices
Interdisciplinary Workshop for Speech and Language Therapists & Psychologists
Selective mutism is often misunderstood. A child who speaks freely at home may be unable to speak in school or other social settings—not due to shyness, but because of an anxiety-based condition that can significantly affect social, emotional, and academic development. Despite being relatively common, it remains underdiagnosed and frequently overlooked.
This workshop provides a comprehensive, evidence-based introduction to selective mutism, combining theory, assessment, and practical intervention strategies. Participants will develop the skills to:
- Identify selective mutism and distinguish it from other communication or anxiety-related difficulties
- Understand contributing and maintaining factors in the child’s environment
Apply effective, low-pressure intervention strategies that support communication without increasing anxiety
Day 1 focuses on understanding the nature of selective mutism, including causes, differential diagnosis, and holistic approaches that promote participation and well-being across settings.
Day 2 introduces structured “small-steps” interventions, with practical techniques to help children begin speaking in safe contexts and gradually generalise their communication to broader environments.
Throughout the workshop, learning is supported by case examples and video material, ensuring a strong link between theory and everyday practice.
This workshop emphasizes the importance of coordinated, cross-disciplinary efforts in early identification and intervention—key factors in improving outcomes for children with selective mutism.
